Helly Hansen, the leading global sailing brand trusted by professionals around the world, is honoured to be recognised with a Good Design Award and as a Gold Winner by the German Design Awards, the highest distinction in the competition, for the new Ægir Ocean Jacket 2.0. The German Design Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the design landscape across all industries, with the Gold award given to truly groundbreaking and holistic design achievements, and the Good Design Award remains the oldest and the world’s most recognised program for design excellence worldwide. Both awards organisations received submissions from over 50 countries – with winners representing the best designs in terms of innovation, quality, and functionality. Evaluated by an international jury of design experts across industries, the awards celebrate the jacket’s performance-driven design developed with insights and feedback from ocean racing professionals.
Working closely with professional sailors, including round-the-world record-breaking sailor Thomas Coville, the Ægir Ocean Jacket 2.0 launches in Spring ’25 with an updated fit, features, and Helly Hansen’s most waterproof fabric construction, HELLY TECH® Professional. Helly Hansen’s designers, materials and R&D teams, and pattern makers worked together closely to deliver lab-tested technologies and a more refined articulation of the garment allowing for improved movement, comfort, and range of motion.
The advanced HELLY TECH® Professional 3-ply fabric construction features a multi-layered composite membrane that is highly protective and fully waterproof. By using premium quality recycled nylon yarns originating from recycled fish nets, the face fabric is even sturdier and promises sailing-grade performance.
Adding to the Ægir Ocean Jacket 2.0 is the new modular 3-piece collar. The fixed collar houses a packable hi-vis hood with a transparent UV-protective visor, while an additional and easily detachable collar extension includes a face mask to suit ocean sailors’ needs, up to the most extreme conditions. To enhance ease of use, the advanced front YKK AQUASEAL® 2-way access zipper is completely waterproof, removing the need for a placket. The now seamless shoulders ensure even less chance of water leaking through your layers.
Rounding out the list of jacket features are tight latex seals at the wrists to guarantee water stays outside, and a newly added silicone grip leash for mobile phones to minimize drop risks. Ample hi-vis detailing and SOLAS-grade reflectives maximize visibility and safety.
“Winning 2 prestigious design awards – the Good Design Award and the German Design Award, including the Gold distinction – is a real honour and a reflection of the years of development and testing that went into creating this jacket,” said Øyvind Vedvik, VP of Sailing and R&D at Helly Hansen. “This achievement truly would not have been possible without the invaluable insights and collaboration with some of the world’s top sailors and teams. They understand harsh conditions better than anyone and their feedback helped us not only to innovate with advanced materials and technologies, but also to ensure that every detail could meet the rigorous demands of ocean racing.”
Statement from the German Design Awards jury: “This sportswear piece employs innovative materials to meet the specific demands of offshore sailors, offering robust, recycled protection. The Ægir Ocean Jacket 2.0 impresses with modular details and enhanced safety, making it the ideal choice for demanding outdoor enthusiasts.”
